On Friday night, the annual Black Girls Rock Awards Show launched for its tenth year and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made an appearance.
For those unfamiliar with Black Girls Rock, it showcases black women who are changing the world in every capacity. It uplifts and empowers black women to achieve their dreams no matter who they are. The show highlights issues that Black women and the Black community face. While I am a huge fan of the show and an avid watcher, I am confused to why Mrs. Clinton decided to make an appearance.
Clinton took the stage to remind Black women that there are still are many barriers that we face today. She told a crowd of already phenomenal and intelligent women that, “a gathering like this filled with so many powerful, strong women is a rebuke to every single one of those barriers. All of our kids, no matter what zip code they live in deserves a good teacher and a good school, a safe community and clean water to drink.”
For these words, Mrs. Clinton received a standing ovation and I have to ask why?
If I can recall correctly, the very platform that Mrs. Clinton stands on goes against everything she just promised to Black women. Clinton and her liberal compatriots helped to create the very barriers she claims to want to help break down.
Mrs. Clinton, your words may make a good stump speech, but I want to remind you and your supporters how your policies and viewpoints on issues, that are crucial to Black survival, are killing us.
Incarceration rates for Black men increased significantly under Bill Clinton’s presidency when he signed the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act that took Black men from their homes and forced Black women to support their families single-handedly.
Mrs. Clinton openly supports Planned Parenthood and Margaret Sanger, an unabashed racist who wanted to destroy the black community. How can you stand in front of thousands of Black women and tell them that you are for them, when one of your biggest contributors kills a large percentage of black babies each year?
Mrs. Clinton advocates for better schools and communities for the Black community. What does that look like? Does it look like members of the community having discussions with their leaders when problems arise? Or does it look like an oppressive dictatorship, where the community leaders bar questions and inquiries, similar to Mrs. Clinton’s tours of Historically Black Colleges and Universities? Or does it just look like another round of government welfare checks and single parents homes? Because with her anti-school choice stance and “government knows best for you people” mentality, that is what Black America will receive under another Clinton administration.
For years, Black America has been nothing more than a political punching bag and in 2016 that is still the case. Just last year, Mrs. Clinton stood before a crowd and stated when addressing race issues in America, “I mean if we are being honest, for well-meaning, open-minded white people, the sight of young black men still evokes a twinge of fear.”
Invokes fear for who exactly? Well-meaning, open-minded white people like Mrs. Clinton?
Mrs. Clinton has no true remedy for Black America’s problems because then she would have to admit that she contributed and still contributes to creating those problems today. She supposedly champions clean water, but where was she when the Flint Water Crisis broke out? Giving a crowd moving, tear jerking speech without any intent to act. Talk is cheap.
While her language may be empowering her actions are far from it. She is the epitome of a candidate trying to get votes to promote her own agenda which has nothing to do with empowering Black America.
So while I applaud her for showing up and gracing us with her presence, her politics aren’t needed because they aren’t working. With half of Black America’s men incarcerated and high death rates due to police brutality that her liberal policies promote, Black America needs more than a stump speech. We need improvements that place emphasis on community efforts, entrepreneurship, and family and that is something Mrs. Clinton and her plantation overseer mindset cannot give us.
Black Women, we do rock and we don’t need Hillary Clinton to tell us that!
